Writing Better Discussion Threads

This PDF is a great start to thinking about how to write about discussion messages and responses.
The Three Part Post according to Dr. Judith Boettcher (Executive Diretor of the Corporation for  Reasearch and Educational Networking) is a great way to construct your discussion thread process (University Writting Center, pg. 1).
When you are asked a question in the thread where you are responding to problem, a particular challenge or idea the three parts are good to incorporate in your response.
    • "Part 1: State what your considered thought or recommendation might be. In otherwords, answer the question, 'What do you think?'

    • Part 2: State why you think what you think. Examine your own experiences, beliefs, or knowledge. It is also good place to provide references, textual quotations, and/or links to materials that reinforce your opinion.

    • Part 3: State what you wish you knew or directly solicit the opinion of classmates (in other words, ask a question!)"
Using these three part posting will help you get better grades, learn more and have better retention in the class, as well as, give people something to respond to from your posts.

 Citation Generators

Using a citation generator is not to take away from knowing how to do it yourself. Every college student needs to know how to use a physical copy of some type of writers reference and or a citation generator to get things correct. Giving credit to an authors work is very important.

I have a few that I have used and these work very well. Some websites offer much more than just a quick fix of information. Make sure you know the type of format you should be doing (APA, MLA, and Chicago).
